ANIMAL EXPLOITATION EFFECTS US ALL

Intersectionality

Secondhand Stories recognizes the overlap between social justice issues and animal rescue work. We, the caregivers, as persons of privilege, seek to be allies by actively working to dismantle oppressive systems that negatively impact marginalized groups.

We are dedicated to fostering a safe and welcoming environment on our online platforms and at our sanctuary grounds, which are located on the stolen lands of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, and Huron-Wendat peoples. We recognize our responsibility to listen, learn, and fiercely advocate for Indigenous sovereignty and justice. Rooted in Indigenous teachings of kinship, Secondhand Stories strives to honour all beings by creating a sanctuary where chickens are valued as individuals deserving of care, respect, and belonging.

The sanctuary has developed an Anti-Discrimination, Inclusion & Diversity Policy and Non-Harassment & Anti-Violence Policy (view here: p.21) that includes specific actions we (the board and volunteers) commit to. Examples include:

● Not comparing animal suffering with forms of human oppression (i.e. slavery, assault)
● Ensuring accessibility for supporters on social media through the use of captions on videos;
● If hosting any future market events, we will strive to ensure that BIPOC and 2SLGBTQIA+ members make up at least 50% of tabling organizations/businesses.
● Offering no-fee sanctuary tours so that marginalized communities are not excluded, and finances are not a barrier.
● Coordinating carpool options for volunteer days and tours so that not just the privileged can attend.

Recognizing the limits of the co-founders' own knowledge and lived experience, we would like to highlight some of the incredible organizations working to address systemic racism, sexism, heterosexism, and ableism that are not only prevalent across the world but also within the animal protection movement. We encourage you to visit the following organizations' websites to learn more:
