⏳Commitment: Flexible, estimated 3 hours every other week
Role Overview
Are you passionate about animal care and interested in making a direct impact on the lives of rescued chickens? Secondhand Stories Chicken Sanctuary is looking for a dedicated volunteer to assist with the care and well-being of our rescued hens and roosters. This on-site volunteer position involves cleaning coops, preparing enrichment activities for the chickens, and assisting in chicken health care - all of which have a direct and immediate impact on the lives of the rescued chickens.
Volunteer Responsibilities
Assist in cleaning coops and outdoor areas to maintain a safe, sanitary, and comfortable environment
Support enrichment activities to ensure the chickens have a stimulating and happy environment.
Observing for signs of illness, injury, or behavioural changes, and reporting any concerns.
Assisting in safely handling chickens for routine care procedures, such as nail, spur, and beak trimming, and health checks, ensuring their comfort and well-being during the process.
Help with general maintenance of the sanctuary, including organizing supplies and helping with minor repairs.
Qualifications & Skills
Previous experience with chickens or other farmed animals is an asset but not required.
Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, rain, and cold.
Ability to lift and carry feed bags, bedding, and other supplies (up to 25 lbs)*
Attention to detail and willingness to follow proper care procedures.
Passion for animal welfare and a compassionate attitude.
A criminal record check is required, at no cost to the volunteer.
*Note that none of the above skills are strictly required, and we are happy to work within your comfort!
